1999 Chinatown Moon Festival

The Chicago Chinatown Chamber of Commerce once again invited the Ng Family Chinese Martial Arts Association to organize a festival event to promote the Chinese culture for this year’s Autumn Moon Festival celebration.  Collaborating with members of the Chicago Chinatown Chamber of Commerce, the Ng Family Chinese Martial Arts Association decided to put on stage production that would act as the theme for the entire celebration.  A popular story from the novel by Gum Yung (Jin Yong) called (roughly translated) “Deer Mountain Chronicles,” was used as the basis for the production.  The story is told around a wily character by the name of “Little Bo” who himself is a close advisor to the Emperor, Hong Hei.  Having no real martial arts skills of his own, “Little Bo” relies on his eight wives (each a gifted martial artist) and his wits to overcome an evil high ranking General dubbed (for the purposes of our play) “O’Brien”.  Sifu Phil played the role of Little Bo, Instructor Ken Lee took on the role of the Emperor, and Instructor Keith Voney acts as the evil O’Brien.  Six of Little Bo’s lovely wives were played by former winners and contestants of Chicago’s Miss Chinatown pageant.

In addition to the great production, there were many other performances and spectacles, included lion and dragon dances, a parade including member of the cast, and martial arts performances by the Ng Family Chinese Martial Arts Association.  The months of planning preparations paid off, as the event was a success in promoting the Chinese culture and drew into Chinatown thousands of spectators and guests.
